Yr 7-10 Maths and Maths Challenge

Students in years 7 – 10 have made a fantastic start to the term in their maths classes.

The year 7's have been introduced to the new language of algebra, after a few disgruntled groans they are starting to enjoy it and are progressing really well. They all enjoyed their excursion to Polly Woodside and learned how maths was used 100 years ago aboard a cargo ship.

The year 8's have been studying perimeter, area and volume for the past few weeks of last term and this term and were able to consolidate their understanding during our excursion to Polly Woodside. Polly Woodside is a tall ship that was used to transport cargo around the world and is now permanently docked at South Wharf in Melbourne. As a final challenge for the year 8's they were asked to calculate the perimeter, area and volume of a doughnut and ate it as a reward. Next we are starting linear equations and graphing.

The year 9's are about to finish their topic on measurement. They will be travelling into Melbourne in a few weeks to observe and analyse how perimeter and area are used in architecture and design around the Fitzroy Gardens. This will be a fantastic way to summarise their topic and investigate the important of maths in the real world.

The year 10 students will be starting the topic of financial maths this week. This topic is probably the most useful and pertinent area for all students to study and understand. It teaches students how to calculate principal and compound interest on loans, how to compare interest rates, depreciation and how to grow a business successfully. Something that everyone will come across in their life!

7/8 Maths Challenge:

Maths Challenge this term is turning back time for the students. Their major assignment this term is to research and present to their class mates the history of one mathematical topic of their own choice. Students will be spending time in the computer lab researching and deciding how they will present their new found knowledge to the class.
